Hitting That Pause Button

Hi everyone. Good afternoon. Adel’s here.

It’s almost the end of September and I realized my last two post had been very devastating to say the least so . . . I decided to write something different to change the mood. Since I’m turning 24 next week, I will do something light and fun here. Other than giving you all updates of my days, I will answer 24 random questions that I got from Pinterest. But, to catch you all up to what’s happening for the last few days, I have been trying tons of non-dairy milk. So far, my favorite is Nature’s Oat and Almond Milk. I love the nuttiness and somehow it didn’t have the almond odor that usually annoyed me so that’s really good. It worked well with the hot cocoa and of course, my one true breakfast love, oatmeal. Second place goes to Blue Diamond Almond Milk in Latte flavor. It’s only around 80 calories per 200 ml. Can you believe it? Your girl finally has the answer to enjoy milk without worrying too much about the fat content -dear metabolism rate in my body, can you go up a notch, just a bit, pretty please :’)- I finally get a groove to a new routine at the apartment. I also have successfully gone back to exercising so props to my lazy self for pulling through. I think the fact that sis is doing it together with me helps a lot. It pushed me to be consistent and responsible to the commitment I told myself I would do. Ooh, my oath ceremony is predicted to be around 21 October so for those who wants to shower this girl with flowers, better put the order in #justkidding. The preparation for the “day” has been very interesting to say the least. Between deciding whether we want it to be offline, semi online or online to dealing with internal problems among committees. Fingers crossed everything will work out just fine. Then, I fell in love with Maji’s Youtube channel, again. Her kitchen was amazing and her diet, got me drooling 10.30 PM at night. But truthfully saying, watching her videos gave me the inspiration to dive back in to my childhood dream which is to open up a café. Also, the Atma Up magazine is finally finished! Thank God. Erika is going to jazz it up and we’re good to go. Once the PDF is ready, I’ll attach it here so you guys can see. With this project being close to over, I have taken up three scientific articles to write. One is already on the way and it’s quite easier compared to the two so . . hopefully I will finally have a paper published in an international journal site. Last but not least, I have decided to go to Bali on October. The original plan was 15th September but then strict social distancing happened again and I didn’t want my parents to worry sick about me. Plus, since I’m living together with sis under one roof, I didn’t want to risk bringing the virus home. She’s not in her best condition considering the amount of work and stress she has to deal with on daily basis. The least I can do is lessen the probability of her getting it by not being so hot-headed about leaving to Bali. I will still go after all but since it didn’t work out and internship is still to be decided and announced, I have run out of reasons to fly there quickly. For those who are concerned, I am in a better mental and emotional state now. Things are clearer, the longing are less prominent. The muscle memory of texting him is also not as strong as it used to so yea, all is heading towards a better direction. Okay, so that’s all and let’s head to the first question!

1. What’s your biggest kitchen fail?

I have tons of failures, from cracking bad eggs into cocoa powder to almost baking the perfect macaroons on my first try. But the biggest fail will be . . . forgetting the fact that meringue needed to be baked or at least torched before consumption. So back in 2013, I had two girls who were quite close with me. Jen loved cupcakes so when she celebrated her birthday, Santi and I decided to bake her 6 cupcakes. I forgot how I got to the idea of putting meringue on top of the cupcakes but we ended up doing it. Thankfully, the cupcakes were made one day in prior of our planned birthday surprise so when mom realized we didn’t bake the cupcake with the meringue again, she kinda put it into the oven secretly behind our backs. I am very thankful for that since her actions saved me from giving my friend Salmonella. Gracias mom. Lesson learnt!

2. Have you ever sent a text message to the wrong person?

If you know me in real life, you know how clumsy I can be. Sending a message to the wrong person is nothing by now. Thankfully, no stupid drunk message ever sent yet . . not that I’m planning on doing it anytime soon #wink

3. What is the most embarrassing thing that happened to you in school?

It happened in primary school when I twirled and just like in K-Drama, there’s this strong wind coming through and so . . the skirt went up for a quick second and I kinda flashed my friend who thank the Lord were girls. But still, embarrassing.

4. What is your signature dance move?

My dear can testify to this. I have a fantastic wave dance move that is quite lethal #LOL #kidding. On a serious note, I think I am the kind of people who feel and groove to the music rather than having one perfect move. As long as we’re having fun, right?

5. What is one thing you refuse to share?

One is too little. I don’t want to share my mom’s love other than to my sis, I don’t want to share my significant other to people outside of his family and friends . . .

Okay, again on a serious note, I think the amount of respect I have towards myself is something that I don’t want and/or able to share just because I think people need to have a common sense of respecting others without people requesting it from them. Plus, respect should be earned and not given so easily. I’m old school that way.

6. If you could kill off any character from a current television show, who would it be?

I don’t want to kill anyone. Without a villain, there’s no thrill. Without the protagonist, there won’t be movies. So, I believe in a good television show, each character represents a trait, a message that might not be for everyone but is crucial to progression of the storyline in the show. Plus, what is a show without a good old drama in it.

7. If you had the power to shrink anything and take it with you, what would you do with it?

I don’t think I have any staple things that I need to shrink for me to be able to have it at all times. My phone, wallet is in a size that’s comfortable to be brought around. Ehm, ooh, maybe if I can keep the quantity to its original condition, I will shrink the big alcohol spray. We’re still facing pandemic so . . . hygiene comes first.

8. If you could make a rule for a day and everyone had to follow it, what would it be?

Simple, being honest and truthful about things that has been hurting and/or burdening you for a very long time. I realized I got hurt most when people lied to me so it would be nice to have a day when I’m sure people are telling me the exact truth with no bullshit.

9. What’s a holiday that doesn’t exist that you’d like to create?

Fakes-giving. I like the idea of celebrating some sort of a family gathering the middle of the year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are too close. I want to have a “solid” reason to bring my big family together, to catch up while having a great meal. Food is a big thing in our family which is why Chinese reunion dinner is something we wouldn’t miss unless it’s really impossible for us to gather round to celebrate it.

10. Have you ever noticed that easy open packages never seem to open that easy?

I’m with you in this. No explanation needed.

11. If I were a pair of shoes, what kind would I be?

Okay, don’t judge me to hard but I want to be White Converse Wedges. I think it represent femininity in a modern way. It shows that we can do comfortable fashion and we do not only care for the design but also the functionality of it. Now, I’m just overthinking it. Okay, moving on….

12. Would you rather be a hobbit or an elf for 24 hours?

Ehm, tough. Hobbit, I guess. The reason is because at New Zealand, there’s Hobbiton. My family had the chance to visit the place when my sis graduated from University of Auckland. I couldn’t join in because . . well, the life of Atma Jaya med student -if you know you know :’)- But anyways, from the pictures and stories my family told me, I think living as a hobbit in Hobbiton is similar or even the same as me living my life as a human being now. The big difference will be, I don’t have to do piercings ‘cause my ears already have something special on it.

13. What mythical creature would improve the world most if it existed?

Guardians like Jack Frost, Sandy, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and of course huggable papa Santa Claus. It’s been quite dark and scary this year. Tons of things are crumbling apart and I think we all can use some good happy vibes around us. By having them around, we are constantly “reminded” that there are always things to be grateful for, no matter how little and no matter how bleak the days seemed to be.

14. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Define crazy . . . Is staying awake for 36 hours during clinical rotation crazy or an achievement or something normal? I don’t know. You decide.

15. If you could have an unlimited storage on one thing, what would it be?

Cells that helps with metabolism. I would kill for some help in that area. I miss eating fried rice without thinking of the calories and exercises I have to do afterwards. I lowkey think I’m starting to have food fear but . . .again, it could be me overthinking things since I eat snacks quite fine nowadays.

16. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Ehm, it changes overtime but maybe Sun Du Bu Jigae or fried chicken. I love a good portion of fried chicken, always.

17. Do you like “people watching” and can you come up with a story about them?

Definitely. I’m the kind of people who enjoys having her personal time by sitting down at one of Starbucks corner, observing the things that are happening around me. It helps me to calm the mind, to relax the body and to just chill and gain some inspiration.

18. What is the most hilarious childhood memory you can think of?

To be completely honest, I didn’t really remember, more of being told by my mom. I was always the kind of girl who couldn’t sit still so back when I was three or four, I completely drenched myself with water from Aqua galloon that’s just been bought by mom. I kept on playing with the tap and . . you could say I took a third bath with that drinking water. Mom was not pleased but at least she wasn’t mad either, so yea. Experience am I right?

19. After you survive the apocalypse, what will your job be?

Probably still a doctor, just need to learn more about the new emerging diseases after apocalypse happened. If it’s super-hot, some bacteria and viruses can’t survive so they either vanish or mutate into something different. Could be stronger, could be weaker. O well, it’s something to figure out.

20. If you had to become an inanimate object for a year, what object would you choose to be?

Waves. I get to be a part of my favorite place, which is the beach for a year. That’s not a bad thing at all.

21. You are about to get into a fight, what song comes on as your soundtrack?

Tough decision to make. Either Body Talks by The Struts or My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark by Fall Out Boys. If it’s about cheating men, then FU by Miley Cyrus. Definitely!

22. What set of items could you buy that would make the cashier the most uncomfortable?

None ‘cause the things I buy wouldn’t be freaky to anyone unless if you consider buying 5 bottles of milk for a week strange then maybe that.

23. I’ve been thinking of starting a cult. What kind of cult should we start together?

Self-love Cult. I think it will take an extreme measure for us now to really bring this topic to the spotlight. We need to remind people on the importance of self-love and in what ways it can be applied to. It doesn’t simply mean accepting our body. It encompasses things way bigger than that. If we love something someone, we want it or them to blossom and become a wonderful thing/person. That’s a beauty that people nowadays had yet to discover.

24. What movie completely changes its plot when you change one letter in its title?

The Little Women to The Little Woman. The great thing about that movie is it talks about various struggles that women faced. From trying to decide on what to do with life, to making priorities and facing grief. It also talks about sacrifices and it highlighted on how women could be as strong as men, only portrayed in different ways. I like how the title already implied that there are more than just one-woman story. It’s a collection and how all those differences helped them to discover themselves as a human being in general. It shows that it’s okay to be different as long as you’re opened to people’s constructive criticism and you have clear vision and determination on reaching the goals you set for yourself. If you haven’t watched it, you should. It’s a good movie.

Well, that’s it. I know it’s not the typical get-to-know-me questions but I think it’s a fun way to show you guys that I am not all serious. I do have a fun side that you have yet to see.

To close this post, I want to express my gratitude to my close friends and family members, especially during these trying times. I have lost two family members during this pandemic and although I might not be the closest one to them, the agony is still there. We couldn’t even head back home to join in my grandma’s funeral. We couldn’t hold a mass for my uncle properly. On top of everything, experiencing yet another heartbreak and the feeling of being thrown away by someone who you got close to over the months was tough to handle. Just sincerely want to say thank you to them who have given their time to stick around and make sure I’ll make it through just fine within time. Again, thank you! Love you and till then, stay safe!

Sincerely,

Genoveva Verena Adella 🥀
